Trials, Trust and God's Perfect Love.

       Is life perfect? No, it most certainly is not. Does that mean God doesn't love us? Some people assume so, but the answer is that God loves us more than we could ever conceive of. Everything that happens to us is to make us stronger, to help us to experience all life has to offer, and to teach us more about sorrow and joy, anger and love, pride and humility. Indeed, if we are to become exalted and inherit "all that the Father hath," we first need to understand it, and the ramifications of using and abusing said power. Eternity is a long time to learn, but God wants us to get a head start. Hence the need for trials in this earthly life.

So why do we have the trials we have? Why is everyone unique, and why do some people just outright suffer more than others? A simple way of explaining that is to say that God knows each of us on the most personal level we can think of, and He ultimately knows what is best for us on an eternal scale. He knows who we are, what we can become, and what lives we can touch while we are here.

A bit more lengthy way to explain this is that God believes in our ability to persevere and prevail. Why is this more lengthy to explain? Because so often people will profess a belief in God, a faith in Him, but will rarely have faith in themselves. I know I have often said myself, "I know God can do all things, but I just can't." It's a common problem; when faced with adversity, even if we have faith in God, we lose hope for ourselves, and consign ourselves to failure.

A few brief examples. There are some people in this life who struggle with crippling injuries or diseases, which could not possibly be attributed to any fault of their own. Why must they suffer perpetually, and watch their bodies deteriorate with nothing they can do? Why must their prayers "go unanswered," despite any amount of faith exercised? To this I must say, like Nephi, that "I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things." However, I do know that eternity is a far longer time than even a hundred years of suffering, and that God promises all of us, just as He did with Joseph Smith, that "if thou endure it well, God will exalt thee on high."

We do not know the hundreds of lives we touch every day merely with our example. These people who have suffered so much, for so long, are a shining beacon of faith and hope, despite constant trials and afflictions. God does love them, even if they are suffering now, because He knows that their suffering will be but for a small moment.

Another example, perhaps more common, are people who struggle with relationships. No matter what they do, no matter how much they pray, they cannot seem to "find the one." God leads them down the path they must walk, with them believing it will end in happiness, but it is marked with sorrow and broken hearts. So many lose faith in God after seeing their romantic, platonic and familial relationships shattered before them. Or, if not, they merely consign themselves to the belief that something is wrong with them, that they are unloveable, and that all future relationships will fail.

The truth is that God heareth all prayers, and answereth them in a manner He knows will provide for us in a way that we cannot comprehend. If we have lost faith in Him, we have lost our way. If we haven't, yet we still lose hope, perhaps we have lost faith in ourselves. We doubt the answers we receive. We do not understand that God believes in us. To truly believe in Him, we must believe that He knows that we are able to persevere through all affliction we face.

There are a myriad of trials one can face in this life, and no individual will go through life without facing at least a few of these. The important thing is to not lose hope, either in God or in ourselves. In God because He knows all things from an eternal perspective, and in ourselves because He loves us and trusts us to be able to handle all we are put through. Just as the strongest steel must be melted and folded over itself time and again until it cannot possibly be folded any more, so it is with our lives. To make us strong, God puts us through affliction and calamity, knowing that if we endure it well, we shall be worthy of exaltation in the highest degree.

I know that all things happen for a reason, and that reason is not always wickedness. I know that bad things happen to good people, because God wants to make us stronger. I know that God would never force things to happen His way, because agency is so important to Him that He let a third of all His spirit children walk away into everlasting punishment rather than force them to choose the right. I know that He guides us down the right paths, but it is our choice to accept and bear well the infirmities of our lives. In this I do solemnly bear witness, with Jesus Christ as my savior, Amen.

Spiritual Discernment and Unsteady Foundations - A Discourse.

To begin at the point; What is spiritual discernment? How can we know the things of God? In first corinthians chapter 2, Paul talks about discerning spiritual things.

" 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

This is key to understanding the nature of the Gospel. The natural man simply cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God - they are counted as foolishness, and he will not even consider them. He is blinded by the tracts of the adversary, and is thus prevented from gaining spiritual knowledge.

Note that these people may be blinded by the devil and his angels, but they are not entirely devilish by nature. They do not understand spiritual knowledge and are thus led away from it. Those who are truly devilish, who are true adversaries of Christ, understand His doctrine perfectly, and do all in their power to tear it down.

Remember that when Christ cast out devils, every one of them knew who He was, and answered to His voice as the Son of God. They were spirits, their memories having not been lost by the veil of birth. They understood Christ and His role as messiah perfectly. But, as to their nature, this understanding led them to revile against Him, and play with the hearts of others to destroy Him. They knew truth, they could not deny it, but they could lie to others and convince them to deny it.

This is how Satan works. It is how he always has worked, and it is how he always will work. Upon hearing and knowing truth, the true nature of our souls comes out, which ultimately decides if we will be cast out of God's presence into Outer Darkness. Satan and his current angels already made that choice; they had truth, they fought against it, and they received their punishment. All the rest of us agreed with and accepted the truth, and thus we are on Earth to see if we will find and agree with it again.

Satan knows that the vast majority of us will, if given the chance, accept and embrace the absolute truth of God. That is why he uses deception and lies to blind us from the truth, to lead us away from it. He darkens our minds to it and convinces us away from it, so that when it finally is revealed to us we may doubt and consider alternate avenues. If we let him blind us in this way, he has won the battle for our soul, and thus we have lost our souls.

Lies and deceit will always fail. The Truth will always break them down, whether in this life or the hereafter. The "Great and Spacious Building" is truly a marvelous wonder, not because of its grandeur, not because of its patrons, but because it manages to stand, held aloft upon a foundation of lies and deceit. It may seem sturdy, it may stand for decades, generations, even millennia, but eventually it will fall, when the truth of God echoes forth. In that day, all who built upon its fragile foundation will see it for what it truly is, but it will be too late. They will be caught within the building when the proverbial earthquake of the Truth of God causes it to shake, tumble, and fall to the Earth. They will be trapped within their house of lies, and will finally see that they stood against the truth.

We must not fall for Satan's lies, and we must not allow the man-made influences of the "natural man" to deceive us. The truly natural things, the truth of God and his "Tree of Life," will stand the test of universes. The path is strait and narrow because that is the only way which will remain after the floods, the tempests and the great upheavals caused by the revealed truth. Stand with God, His truth, and His everlasting joy and life. No deceit or threat or attack will ever take that from you unless you let it.

This is my testimony of the Truth of God, and His wondrous plan for our souls.

The Doctrine of Marriage; A Discourse.

Marriage is between man, woman and God.

Period. Paragraph. End of story. Amen.

What, I need to explain myself? Defend my statement? Okay, perhaps this brief stream of consciousness will suffice.

With the supposed "re-definition of marriage" as a legal bond between any two consenting adults, it has become apparent that the previous - and eternal - definition of marriage must be reintroduced to society. Marriage, true marriage, never was simply between a man and a woman. A true bond of marriage is a contract between a man, a woman and God. Man and Woman covenant with God to love each other, to cleave unto each other, to support each other and be completely faithful to each other. God, in return, seals the couple together, lending them divine intervention and assistance in times of trial, provided they are both faithful to all covenants they have theretofore made and are continually striving to aid each other and come closer to God. Thus, marriage unites a trinity into a force of one purpose - eternal life, eternal progression, and eternal posterity.

Marriage in this sense is unselfish. True joy is found within this righteous bond, but it takes hard work and dedication. The benefits of a righteous marriage span endless generations, as we all are indirectly affected by the collective decisions of our ancestors. One broken marriage, one fatal misstep in spiritual conduct, and an entire branch of family can end, or be diverted down unknown and tragic roads. One righteous marriage, however, with continued support throughout eternities, affects potentially millions of lives for the better.

Same-sex marriage, on the other hand, is entirely selfish. It is all about the wedded couple, all about the personal benefits they receive, and does nothing to support future generations. It ends true family bloodlines instantly. Most of all, God is not involved. He does not seal the bastardized matrimony with His Holy Priesthood because He hath declared it sinful and unrighteous.

People of the legal world do not care about God, because they fail to find an adequate way to define Him. This very problem happened in Rome, and was supposedly "solved" by the Nycean Creed. However, such creeds "are an abomination to [Him]." God created man in His own image; men cannot then recreate God in their own image. Thus, God is incomprehensible to the legal world, so they discount Him and refuse to have any dealings directly involving Him, His nature, or His law.

Thus, to the legal world, it makes perfect sense that marriage should be extended to all individuals, because "all men are created equal." They do not claim to define the nature of this creation, aside from describing its intended purpose as making everyone equal. Thus, man and woman, even things which can clearly be defined as different, are made equal by cold, dispassionate law. Marriage can no longer be legally defined as "man and woman" because legally "man = woman," so there can no distinction be made on a legal basis. Plain, simple, unfettered equality.

To God, however, while all souls are equally loved, we are all made with unique purposes, unique trials, and indeed an individual gender. "in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Gender is a specific, intentional difference which divides us, defines us, and unites us with God. It helps give our lives purpose and meaning, and enables us to become co-creators with God, empowering us with the responsibility of bringing His spirits into this world.

Thus, marriage can be declared as "between a man and woman and God," because it is God who sets the terms. Despite changing legal definitions, marriage in this manner, and ONLY this manner, is ordained of God. God's law is not man's law, although oftentimes they intersect. Changing one will not inherently change the other, and God's laws themselves are unchanging. Infinite and eternal, God relies not upon any concept of time or circumstance; He sets all bars as they are, and He doth not waver in His decisions.

Thus, one can plainly see that the only true definition of marriage has been and will always be "a covenant between a man, a woman and God." Period, paragraph, end of conversation.

Salvation vs Exaltation - A Doctrinal Analysis

       Salvation is the focus of nearly all of Christianity. Christ's Atonement offers Salvation to all who will accept it, "Without money and without price." Grace is His gift, and it frees us of the burden of guilt we accumulate through sin. Being "Saved" in this sense truly is as easy as accepting Jesus Christ as your savior.

So, if that is salvation, then what of principles and ordinances? Why would man be forced to follow a strict path if accepting a freely offered gift is all that is required to achieve this salvation?

In truth, man is not forced to follow a path; he is "free to choose liberty and eternal life, ... or captivity and death." What we do in this life, what we ultimately achieve, is in our own hands. In this, Salvation is but the beginning of an eternal journey. Exaltation is, or at least should be, the true purpose of life. "This is [God's] Work and ... Glory; To bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man." As Salvation, and thus immortality, are freely given, He has already completed his first goal. His second, granting us eternal life, depends much more on our own choices.

If we are to understand why eternal life is so important that God has made it his goal to grant it unto us, we must first understand what it truly is. Eternal Life is more than merely living forever - that is immortality, already covered through the Atonement and Resurrection of Christ. But what is merely living? What more could there be? It is how you fill this life, how you "fulfill the measure of [your] creation," which leads to joy.

Fulfilling the measure of our creation is our ultimate purpose. For what were we created? Adam and Eve were created in God's own image to "Multiply and replenish the Earth." Raising posterity is certainly a large measure of our creation, and one of the greatest blessings of eternal life.

What else is the measure of our creation? To learn, grow and even create by ourselves. We are commanded to "Be ... Perfect, even as [Jesus and our Heavenly Father are] perfect," but how are we to attain this perfection? "Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little." Certainly that implies the acquisition of knowledge is at least a part of our purpose for living, and the use of said knowledge is just as important, if not more so. If wisdom is the correct application and use of knowledge, then the Proverb-writer was right to proclaim its worth as "far above rubies." How we use our knowledge will ultimately determine if we are becoming perfect, and thus if we are filling the measure of our creation.

Eternal life is to fill the measure of our creation endlessly, both in this world and the world to come. This blessing can only come about if we earn it, and God has declared that it will only be available to those who achieve exaltation, the highest degree of glory in the Celestial Kingdom. To enter this kingdom, we must be able to pass its gates, and that can only come about by providing the proper signs and tokens, just as passing an earthly gate comes through providing proper identification or authority. God's kingdom is just and perfectly ordered, and thus nothing can enter in except by the way He has declared. This way is Christ, as he declared when he said "I am the way; ... No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." We need to follow Christ to get back to God, and that means far more than accepting Him as our savior - it means becoming like Him, following His example, taking upon us His name and attaining the attributes he displayed.

If Eternal Progression is reserved for those who achieve Exaltation, then what of those who do not achieve Exaltation? They who merely accept Salvation, or who do not accept Christ at all? What is the fate of these, given every chance to change both in this life and in the next, who refuse? Now, I do not claim to know their fate, but by my understanding, they are "consigned to that gulf of misery and endless woe." The "pains of a damned soul" may not be literal fire, it may not be punishment as we understand it, but in the eternal scale, it is a far worse punishment than mere pain.

Those who are unchanged by the Atonement of Christ will remain unchanged. They will not be worthy to inherit "All that [God] hath," and more than that, they will not even want to. The responsibility, the pressure, the power will be more than they can accept. They will WANT to flee God's presence, to reject the great gift He has laid before them, to find their own place of happiness. They do not progress - as such, they are damned. In fact, rather than progress, they will regress, becoming beings capable of finding happiness in their endless lives devoid of growth and change. Such a fate is unfathomable, and is true suffering to anyone with the Godly desire to grow and create.

The separation of these other groups, those not achieving exaltation, is a simple delineation.

        Those who rejected the Plan of Salvation in the pre-mortal life, who never were given the opportunity to progress because they "kept not their first estate," are cast out of heaven. These are joined by those few who in this life had gained a sure witness of the Holy Ghost, but denied its truth. These are they who openly rebelled against God, despite having a true knowledge of His character. They inherit no glory, and are called the Sons of Perdition, dwelling forever in Outer Darkness, devoid of light and life.

        Those who do not accept Salvation exist under a burden of all their guilt, suffering even as "angels to a devil," those followers of Perdition, save it be they have still "kept their first estate," attaining a physical body, and not denying a sure witness of the Holy Ghost. They are still immortal, they still have some power in a physical sense, but their progress is stopped, and they are burdened by chains of their own design. These are they who inherit the Telestial glory.

Those who accept Salvation, but refuse the signs and tokens God requires, enter a kingdom of their own. They are free of the guilt of their sins according to the Atonement, but their progression is still halted, and they do not have power and glory given to them from on high. They do not live in God's presence, and do not feel worthy to approach His throne, so they stay where they are, content with what they have achieved. These are they who inherit the Terrestrial glory.

There are those who inherit lesser degrees of the Celestial glory. These are they who follow Christ, accept Salvation, and even present the signs and tokens to enter God's presence. They have followed Him and His Son, but have fallen short of true eternal progression, as they have not entered into "The New and Everlasting Covenant of Marriage," which is required to have and maintain posterity throughout the eternities. They are servants of God, His angels and loyal children, and know incredible joy. They progress to an extent, but they cannot inherit "worlds without end," as they do not have posterity unto themselves. These are they in the first and/or second degree of the Celestial Kingdom.

Those who accept Salvation, follow Christ, present all the signs and tokens, have entered into the New and Everlasting Covenant, and are truly changed, will enter into the Third Degree of the Celestial Kingdom, the Glory of Exaltation. They will continue to progress throughout the eternities, they will have an endless posterity, inheriting "worlds without end," and ultimately know complete joy. "All that [God] hath shall be given unto them," and they will receive it with gladness.

With this greater understanding of the doctrine of Salvation and Exaltation, I hope that some confusion has been cleared up over what the difference between them is, and why Exaltation is so much more than Salvation.
